Dinotopia Arrives in Switzerland

By On June 28th, 2008

Yesterday a truck arrived outside a museum called Maison d’Ailleurs in Yverdon, Switzerland and unloaded several wooden crates containing over 50 original Dinotopia paintings.

The exhibition, called “Return to Dinotopia,” will open October 4 and will run for five months, then continue to other museums in Europe. It will include new paintings and maquettes from Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara.

Maison d’Ailleurs (literally “House of Elsewhere”) is a jewel of a museum specializing in “science fiction, utopia and extraordinary journeys,” with a recently expanded Jules Verne collection. I did this plein-air watercolor sketch of the museum (the white building) when it hosted the last Dinotopia exhibit five years ago.
I’ll be in attendance for the opening of “Return to Dinotopia” in October, which will coincide with the publication of the French edition of Chandara from Editions Fleurus of Paris. After a visit to Switzerland, I’m planning to visit Paris for a few signing events. I am as excited as a schoolboy because I’ve never been to France before!

Musings Over a Pint: Bringing Back Hard Cider, and Promoting Agri-tourism in Virginia

By On June 28th, 2008

The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star is running a story on the comeback of hard cider production in Virginia entitled Hard cider’s second act:

In early America, the undisputed beverage of choice was hard apple cider–even more so than water.

Thomas Jefferson brewed champagne-like cider out of Virginia Hewe’s Crab apples at Monticello.

John Adams guzzled a pitcher each morning with his breakfast, citing its positive health benefits.

Yet, these days, hard apple cider has largely fallen out of favor in the United States. Only a few brands, mostly imported from England, remain widely available.

Now, however, an Albemarle County apple orchard is aiming to spark a cider comeback.

“Cider was the libation of choice in Colonial America,” said Chuck Shelton of Vintage Virginia Apples on U.S. 29 south of Charlottesville. “We’re going to bring cider back.”

Vintage Virginia Apples has received site plan approval from the Albemarle County Planning Commission to build both a cidery and a tasting room. Cider production is expected to begin this Fall, with the tasting room opening in the Spring.

Interesting news indeed, but the most interesting part of the article to me was the tie-in to tourism in Virginia:

Charlotte Shelton, also an owner of Vintage Virginia Apples, said the company is hoping to tap into Central Virginia’s growing agritourism market. With dozens of wineries in the region, it seems only natural that thirsty tourists and Charlottesville food lovers would want to check out the complex flavors of high-end cider, she said.

The same thing could be said of the growing Virginia brewing industry. As I noted in a previous post, the time is right to focus in the tourism aspect of Virginia beer. Why let the wineries get all the agri-tourism dollars? Virginia has long been associated with hop growing. Already Blue Mountain Brewery in Nelson County has started a hop farm, with over 200 rhizomes planted. Looking beyond hops, I recently spoke with one Virginia brewery owner who is working to obtain high grade, Virginia-grown barley for his beer. I look forward to the day I’m following hop-emblazoned signs through the Virginia countryside.

Brookston Beer Bulletin: Action Alert: Delaware Trying To Raise Beer Tax 50%

By On June 28th, 2008

If you live in Delaware and also love good beer, like Dogfish Head and Iron Hill, to name just a couple, please consider contacting your state senator as soon as possible, because the state is trying to raise the tax on beer 50% and the vote is on Monday, June 30, so there isn’t much time. Here’s the info from Support Your Local Brewery:

Dear Delaware Beer Activists and Homebrewers,

Delaware small brewers need your help! Please read the following information provided by the small, independent breweries of Delaware:

A proposal currently moving in the legislature would raise the state tax on beer almost 50%. The small brewers of Delaware are asking you TO CALL YOUR STATE SENATOR TODAY to ask him/her to oppose this unprecedented increase as an extremely harmful measure to the state’s small craft breweries.

At this point, this proposal has not been formally drafted as legislation, but will be amended into an existing bill and voted on Monday, June 30.

NOW IS THE TIME TO CALL YOUR SENATOR — CALLING IS THE QUICKEST, MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD AS TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!

For contact information for your Senator, click here. You will find links to the Senate roster of members. Simply find your Senator and click on their link for contact information.

Following are several suggested points to make to your elected representatives:

  1. Delaware has one of the most vibrant and varied craft brewing communities on the east coast.
  2. Delaware’s small breweries are good for the economy and very good for tourism. Thousands of visitors journey to the state every year to visit these breweries and experience their unique products where they are made.
  3. Small brewers are facing astronomical costs increases across the board – from malt and hops to energy and packaging materials - nearly 40% over last year. If a further tax burden is placed upon Delaware’s small breweries in this challenging economy it will surely put many of those small businesses at risk.
  4. A tax increase of this magnitude will deter start-up breweries from considering locating in Delaware, as it will affect existing breweries’ ability to expand, stalling job growth and possibly forcing Delaware breweries to relocate to states that have more competitive tax structures.
  5. The small, independent breweries of this state need their legislator’s support now more than ever.

Thanks for supporting Delaware’s small breweries!

Spain : Festivals , Celebrations and Fiestas

By On June 28th, 2008

Not only are Spanish people blessed with a large number of National Holidays, there are also numerous holidays for each region, city and town throughout the whole of Spain. Because of this, it is easy to find yourself in the middle of a Spanish celebration while here on holiday. Spanish people love to party and are also very accommodating to visitors to their lovely country. Grab yourself a drink and join in with the fun. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

NEW YEAR’S DAY (January 1st)
New Year’s Day is a public holiday celebrated throughout Spain to welcome in the beginning of a New Year. Each Spanish town and city throughout the country will have some festival arranged in the main square, typically the Plaza Mayor, often accompanied with music and fireworks. Many Spanish people celebrate the passing of the old year by eating 12 grapes, one for each month of the year, during each ring of the twelve bell tolls as the New Year approaches. This is considered to bring good luck, but only if all twelve grapes are eaten in time. Not as easy as it sounds, as many grapes are bought in a small glass flute, with the very last one squashed and difficult to dislodge at the bottom.

DAY OF THE THREE KINGS (January 6th)
Christmas for children in Spain falls on the 6th of January, twelve days after Christmas Day, with the coming of the Three Kings. Children place their socks outside for the Kings to deliver them presents, but only if they have been good. Naughty children have the fear of finding black coal in their socks instead of presents. On the eve of January 6th, it is tradition for three men to dress as the Kings and ride around the town in a colourful procession, scattering sweets to all the children who eagerly follow.

SEMANA SANTA HOLY WEEK (March - April)
Semana Santa is a very religious time for many people in Spain and in all the cities both large and small, processions of hooded penitents carrying religious icons of Jesus and Mary held high, are paraded solemnly throughout the streets. It is a truly emotional and colourful experience for the participants and the many thousands of people who come to watch the procession well into the night.
Processions begin on Palm Sunday and will last until Easter Sunday. Processions in the main towns of all regions of Spain are huge and excel in grandeur. Because this is a deeply religious experience for many Spanish people, fireworks and excessive drinking is frowned upon.

LABOUR DAY (March 1st)
Dia del Trabajo is celebrated as a national holiday throughout Spain.

MONTH OF FERIAS (April)
April is the month of exuberant ferias in Andalucia, with Seville holding what is considered to be the biggest and best in Spain. The festivals last up to two weeks with colourful processions held in traditional costume, bullfights, firework displays, flamenco shows and partying well into the early hours.

SAN JUAN (June 24th)
San Juan is celebrated throughout Spain and particularly in the costal regions with bonfires on the beaches that last all night on the 23rd. It is tradition to rush into the sea at midnight to wash away your sins, symbolising the baptism of Saint John the Baptist. It is the one time when camping is allowed on many beaches, and celebrations typically last all weekend with loud music, fireworks and a lot of noise.

SAN ISIDRO (May / June)
Each city celebrates this fantastic festival differently. Typical Spanish events will involve processions, bullfights, concerts, funfairs and spectacular processions of horses and decorated carts throughout the city. Traditional costumes are normally worn with sweets and local drinks handed out to the many locals and tourists who follow the procession and join in the merriment. This is a great party atmosphere that lasts 2-3 days. In Nerja on the Costa del Sol, the procession leaves the centre of the town and heads towards the famous Nerja Caves, one of the most visited holiday attractions in Spain.

CORPUS CHRISTI (June)
Many large cities hold magnificent processions to celebrate the body of Christ in the holy water by bearing the consecrated host through the streets. This is a solemn and religious festival of great importance to many Spanish people.

ASUNCION (August 15th)
Catholics observe this feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrating Mary’s body being taken to Heaven after her death.

FERIA DE MALAGA (August)
Festival held in the city of Malaga on the Costa del Sol. The festival lasts 10 days and includes a huge number of fairground rides, processions of horses, stalls selling food and wine, and spectacular firework displays on the first and final night.

ALL SAINTS DAY (November 1st)
Relatives spend the day at the graves of their loved ones, to remember them, and adorn them with beautiful flowers.

CONSTITUTION DAY (December 6th)
National holiday throughout Spain in commemoration of the 6th December 1978 when the Spanish people voted in a national referendum to approve the draft constitution, thus providing the way forward for the creation of a democratic system in Spain.

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION (December 8th)
On the Roman Catholic Church calendar of holy days, today is celebrated as a holy day of obligation, commemorating the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

CHRISTMAS DAY (December 25th)
Christmas Day is a national holiday in Spain, but there is not the huge commercial occasion here as celebrated in other western cities. Children may receive a small gift on Christmas Eve (Nochebuena), as the day for presents is 6th January, Epiphany, when the Three Kings come bearing gifts.

DIA DE LOS SANTOS INNOCENTS (December 28th)
Similar to April Fools Day that falls on April 1st in England, this is an opportunity for people to play practical jokes on friends and generally get away with doing silly things.

If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, it is known as a Bridge because many Spanish people like to take either the Monday or Friday off to give a long weekend. Public holidays falling on both Tuesday and Thursday, is commonly known as an Aqueduct, bridging both weekends together. Obviously this is a great opportunity to take all the days off, leaving the whole week free to party. No wonder Spanish people love to celebrate.

Tours Operators in Morocco, Moroccan Travel Agencies

By On June 28th, 2008

Often people ask me if I know any reliable tour operator in Morocco. I understand that for the majority of people it might be difficult to choose among the enormous choice of companies offering their services on the internet.

Moroccan diversity gives the possibility of travel around different types of landscapes and architecture in just few days. Most companies offer 1 and 2 days excursion departing from Marrakesh or Ouarzazate, and, 5, 7, 11 days tours in Morocco departing from major Moroccan cities like Casablanca, Fez, Marrakesh, Rabat and Ouarzazate.

Companies do actually follow the same type of itinerary: Sahara Desert, Kasbahs, Valleys, Oasis, Atlantic Coast, and Imperial Cities.

I will point out a few companies that stand out for their effort to present excellent service, working ethics and reliable 4wd fleet. As I work in close contact with all of them, I can somehow have an idea about their tours, their behavior towards clients and working ethics.

Market Report: November 17

By On June 28th, 2008

I visited the the Countryside Holiday Farmers’ Market in Peninsula today with the thought of picking up a few locally grown items for my Thanksgiving table. I was hoping for winter squash and maybe some greens of some kind. An hour and a half later I was lugging what seemed like 50 pounds of local bounty to my car, my market bag overflowing with fall fruits & veggies, locally raised meats, and some new finds I feel compelled to tell you about.

First of all, the variety of produce still available to us in late November is nothing short of amazing. Farmers I’ve known for the past few seasons are getting smarter and smarter about what they plant and when. They are now able to bring us the traditional fall crops we’ve come to expect like potatoes, turnips, winter squash and apples in addition to baby beets, bok choi and pac choi, carrots, garlic, lacinato kale, rainbow colored radishes, swiss chard and more.

What also impressed me at the market today was the creative energy our local farmers are using to extend the season and utililze the riches of their land in delicious new ways.

Today’s highlight was Bramble Honey and Hickory Syrup produced by Daniel and Michelle Greenfield whose farm is part of the Countryside Initiaitve in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. They moved onto their land last year and promptly planted a variety of raspberries and blueberries for their u-pick berry farm. Since berries take a few years to get established they looked for additional ways to earn a little revenue. First they developed a granola made from local oats and their own honey that provided a lovely canvas for their first-year berry harvest. This fall the Greenfields have introduced two new products. Their Bramble Honey is dark and deeply flavored. I can’t wait to drizzle it on Sunday morning’s toast or enjoy it with a hunk of Parmigiano Reggiano and toasted walnuts or pecans. The Greenfield’s steep the bark of hickory trees found on their farm in a simple syrup to produce their hickory syrup which has a distinctive sweet, floral flavor. It was the buzz of the market today and was unfortunately sold out by the time I arrived. The rave reviews will hopefully result in another batch!

Another highlight were the Homemade Honey Caramels made by Heather and Eric Walters of Basket of Life Farm (also part of the Countryside Initiative and Terra Madre 2006 delegates). These soft, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth morsels are made with honey from their own hives as well as cream, butter, brown sugar and vanilla. Boxed caramels can be special-ordered for holiday gift giving (or your own indulgence) and picked up at the farm on Dec. 2 or 16. For more information, visit the Basket of Life Farm’s blog.

Other treats I brought home included: bison jerky from Red Run Bison Farm, goat brats from Goatfeathers Point Farm, grass-fed beef from Wayne Cattle Company, artisan breads from Great Lakes Baking Company, pork from Rose Ridge Farm, fruit & berry jams from Seville Berry Farm, goat cheese from Lake Erie Creamery, pesto from Janet Hahn, holiday gift baskets from the Countryside Conservancy, honey and handmade soaps from Lazy Bee, and more. Are you starting to understand why my market basket was overflowing?

Unfortunately, this was the last of the Countryside Holiday Farmers’ Markets for the season. With this year’s successful markets, let’s all hope the Countryside Conservancy will return next fall with an expanded holiday market schedule. We can still shop the North Union Farmers’ Market which is open until December 15 and the Coit Road Farmers’ Market which, believe it or not, stays open year round. Local produce and products are also turning up in more and more local grocers. And of course, all the farmers I mentioned above also sell direct as long as they have product available. I’ve included links to websites if they have them or you can check the Countryside Harvest Guide.

So, as Thanksgiving approaches, be sure to remember these local farmers and food producers. Many of the ingredients for our favorite holiday food traditions are grown right here at home. Let’s support and give thanks for all the kind folks who are making Northern Ohio such a tasty place to live these days.

The Rain in Spain

By On June 28th, 2008

I have only experienced horizontal rain in Asian monsoons and Caribbean hurricanes if I exclude visits to the West coast of Norway. Oh yes, and the West coasts of: England; Scotland; Wales; Ireland; and, occasionally North America.

It is depressing and seriously fucks with my golf karma.

I read in the Times on Tuesday that Spain is suffering its worst drought in 4 decades. This story is barely palatable. Climatologists suggest Spain is one of the countries worst affected by global warming, though claim very leaky pipes are a big part of the water shortage. Valencia and Catalonia are the hardest hit regions.

No such luck in Andalucia. The weather gods are conspiring with the golf gods to punish me for one of my many sins. Though I am agnostic, a sin in itself, this often happens to me when visiting Catholic countries. I am holed up safely in the Casa as the wind whistles around corners and the rain pelts the windows.

Even the wildlife has taken refuge. Tuesday morning, Mother duck waddles by the Casa with her gaggle of chicks in tow in search of higher ground. It is very cute but signals to me the dangers at hand. Ducks are good swimmers. They are seeking higher ground. Something wicked this way comes.

Rabbits are not good swimmers. I awake Wednesday morning to a stream of dead bunnies in front of the Casa. It is like Watership Down on acid. I can only assume the local warren has flooded and has spilled onto the property. Mrs. BB weeps like a child for the bunnies. Seeing her in this state breaks my heart. I hug and console her promising to dispose of the carnage shortly after breakfast.

Surveying the task at hand I select a 3 iron from my golf bag. I will repatriate the rabbits to their hole in the rough next to the fairway, a sort of makeshift par 3 mass burial. The bunnies are small but very wet. I change clubs opting for a fairway metal with more loft.

With a gale force 5 to my back the trajectory of the flight is high. The greyness of the horizon is intermittently broken by rabbits gracefully sailing through the air. No holes in one but all makeable birdie putts. I take them as ‘gimmes’ and leave the putter in the bag. This is the only opportunity I will have to swing a club this week and I feel much better for it.

My Spanish amigos are relieved the forecast indicates He will rest on the 7th day. I think He will need a few weeks’ holiday. After the havoc wreaked here He must be spent. I am grateful the weather will be pleasant on Sunday for the drive to Seville to catch the flight back to Oslo, were it is forecast to, uhm… well rain.

I should have listened to Eliza’s repeated warnings and avoided the plains.

David Byrne On Machines and Souls (Máquinas y Almas)

By On June 28th, 2008

Remember David Byrne’s Julio - the creepy realistic animatronic singer?

Byrne has written a post from the opening, at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid. In the post, he elaborates on the show and his throughts on his man-machine:

I don’t think what I’ve addressed thus far really engages the supposed theme of the exhibition; many works seem to address the uncanny, the creepy, and the vaguely lifelike….

Julio, the singing robot made in collaboration with David Hanson’s lab, fits in mainly with the creepy uncanny side of the show. Julio is old-school creepy — he resembles a person, uses lifelike motions, and — yikes! — smiles and looks around, mumbles to himself, and then bursts into song. He recalls a Frankenstein monster, although, instead of being outwardly and obviously scary, he’s quasi-friendly looking and bursting with emotion. I hope the sense of realism together with the singing make him doubly creepy. How can a machine be feeling what’s expressed in the songs.

Like many animals, humans sing for pleasure, for sex, for attention, to express pain, to relieve angst and to join and participate in a social group. All of these urges seem, if not uniquely human, at least not at all machine like. To see machines mimic these aspects of human life, is to watch some part of our imagined souls being appropriated.

While machines can mimic aspects of human, animal and biological processes, they still lack souls, or whatever it is that leaves us sentient, independent beings. Machines, even computers, are for the most part still modeled on digital, binary and logical thought processes, clutching the legacy of Descartes and the Enlightenment. For machines to truly simulate human beings, they will need to reason with their hearts, their emotions, as we and other animals do. We may like to think that cool logic guides, buffers, and tames our hot emotions, but many now believe that the amygdala and other emotional areas of the brain do most of the “thinking.” It seems that much of our thought process is unconscious, based on impulse, gut feeling, and instinct — and no less wise because of it. This is what’s absent in these machines.

For me, an important part of this show is about this lacuna, this missing part. Witnessing a machine approach being human — and for it to be almost believable, but not quite — can be a creepy and unsettling experience.

Search for cheap hotels with all comforts at \”Cheaper than hotels\”

By On June 28th, 2008

Internet has made our life easier as sitting at the comfort of home; we can search for any thing, order or shop or book our tickets for travel of business journey.

I personally search internet for holiday planning. And most of the times I get the perfect package within my budget range. For holiday tour planning my first priority is to keep our journey within budget and hotels offering comfortable stay. My pre-planning saving is used for next holiday package tour.
http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/ is an online reservation service since 1996, for more than 70,000 hotels in 130 countries worldwide, processing more than an estimated 300 million travel transactions per year.

They are able to meet the accommodation needs of travellers at the most competitive rates and the highest ethical standards.

To check if they are really cheaper than other service providers, I checked the Paris Hotels and Travel link, because I was planning to have a tour of France and I wanted to stroll the streets of Paris. I could find an affordable offer with budget beds available from USD$46 at Premiere Classe Hotel Roissy Villepinte Parc des Expositions Paris.

More places to check for their accomodation offers:

- Liverpool Accomodation

- Madrid Hotels and Accommodation

- travel to Barcelona and hotels

They also provide a search engine service where you can use for:
• Amendment / cancellation request
• Rate enquiry
• Membership enquiry
• Complaint notification

A Skeptic\’s Guide to Wikipedia (Part 1)

By On June 28th, 2008

Why Wikipedia Matters

Imagine, if you will, a Mr. Joe Blow. Joe’s your typical guy, unversed in the complexities of medicine, who one day finds an odd rash on his neck. He shows it to a couple of colleagues at work. One of them recommends he goes in to have a dermatologist look at it. The other, however, argues that that would be a waste of money. It would be a lot cheaper for Joe to go to the alternative medicine portion of his local pharmacy. There are plenty of things there that could cure a rash like that. Maybe some Homeopathy would be all he really needs.

Now, Joe hasn’t heard much about Homeopathy before, and he’s getting conflicting messages from his colleagues on whether it’s worth trying. So, when he gets home from work, he logs onto the internet and runs a quick Google search for Homeopathy. The first search result is from “Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.” Well, that sounds good, so Joe goes to read Wikipedia’s article on Homeopathy. He starts by just reading the first paragraph:

Homeopathy (also homœopathy or homoeopathy; from the Greek ὅμοιος, hómoios, “similar” + πάθος, páthos, “suffering” or “disease”) is a form of alternative medicine first defined by Samuel Hahnemann in the 18th century.[1] Homeopathic practitioners contend that remedies for diseases can be created by ingesting substances that can produce, in a healthy person, symptoms similar to those of the disease. According to homeopaths, serial dilution, with shaking between each dilution, removes any negative effects of the remedy while the qualities of the substance are retained by the diluent (water, sugar, or alcohol). The end product is often so diluted that it is indistinguishable from pure water, sugar or alcohol by laboratory tests but is still claimed to have an effect on consumers.[2][3][4] Practitioners select treatments according to a patient consultation that explores the physical and psychological state of the patient, both of which are considered important to selecting the remedy.

Now, what Joe takes from this paragraph depends a lot on his previous biases and knowledge. He might zero in on the part which says that homeopathic remedies generally are nothing but diluted water, and if there is anything left, it would just harm him. Or, he might focus on how it’s been used since the 18th century and is argued to be able to cure his ailment. Or maybe he’ll note from the last sentence that if he really wants it to work, he should be visiting a professional homeopath rather than simply picking something out from the drug store.

Each person will be different here. Many will only read the lead section, a few will read the whole article, while others might skip down to sections that interest them to read about it. But the net result is that Wikipedia is the primary source of information for many people in the current age of the internet.

Homeopaths realize this. So do Chiropractors, Creationists, Scientologists, and people who think Waterboarding isn’t torture (or at least don’t want others to think it is). You can see their incentive to go in and edit Wikipedia to be more favorable to their viewpoints, so that people who read these articles will come out with a positive view of their subject, and maybe then they’ll go see a Homeopath to treat their ailments.

On the other hand, the pro-reality viewpoint doesn’t have quite the same incentive to edit there. There’s no direct benefit to us like there is for the anti-reality types. All we have to go on is the general incentive for why we do this: To help others avoid wasting their money or risking their lives. All of our reasons for blogging on skeptical topics apply also to Wikipedia. It’s just one more place to reach an audience who’s seeking information.

But most don’t bother. In a conversation on Wikipedia recently, one notable skeptic described editing Wikipedia as seeming like “a long run for a short slide.” Personally, I disagree. If we put as much effort into improving Wikipedia’s articles as we did into blogging, I think it would have just as much, if not more, impact. The other problem he raised was that it just seemed futile. Well, maybe alone it is. That’s why I’m making this post, so that perhaps as a group, we can make a difference.

So, I’m now encouraging all of you to start editing Wikipedia in order to bring its articles more in line with reality. I plan to make further posts on this subject, time permitting, in order to give you all a brief primer on Wikipedia editing and some brief tips that I’ve gleaned from experience. If you’d prefer to just jump in right away, though, then go here to start off, then register an account and get to work.
